• Review of history and epidemiology of opioid epidemic
• Discussion of the role of opioids with acute pain, chronic non-malignant pain, and chronic malignant pain
• Potential complications of opioid use
• Appropriate monitoring strategies with chronic opioid use
• Brief discussion of treatment of opioid complications
• Brief review of the impact of legalized cannabis with opioid use
